Home & Commercial EV Charging Solutions
Electric vehicle ownership in Australia is accelerating — and having a reliable home charger is essential. Charging at home overnight is cheaper, more convenient, and faster than relying on public chargers. But EV charger installation isn't a DIY job — it requires a dedicated circuit, appropriate wiring, and often a switchboard upgrade.
Randwick Electrical installs EV chargers across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs for homes, apartments, and commercial properties. We work with all major charger brands and can advise on the best solution for your vehicle, your electrical setup, and your budget.
EV Charger Types — Which One Do You Need?
- Level 1 (Portable/Granny charger) — plugs into a standard 10A power point. Delivers 2–3kW, adding roughly 10–15km of range per hour. Fine for PHEVs or top-ups, but painfully slow for full BEV charging
- Level 2 (Dedicated wall charger) — hardwired on a dedicated 32A circuit. Delivers 7kW (single phase) or up to 22kW (three phase). This is what most homeowners install — a full overnight charge from empty to full in 6–10 hours
- Level 2 Smart chargers — same as above with Wi-Fi/app connectivity, load management, scheduled charging, solar diversion, and energy monitoring. Brands like Zappi, Tesla Wall Connector, and Ocular are popular choices
- Three-phase chargers — for homes with 3-phase power, delivering up to 22kW. Significantly faster charging for vehicles that support it (Tesla Model 3/Y, Polestar, BMW, etc.)
What's Involved in Installation
- Site assessment — we check your switchboard capacity, available circuits, wiring condition, and the distance from the board to the charger location
- Switchboard upgrade if needed — many older Eastern Suburbs homes need a board upgrade or additional circuits to safely support an EV charger's load
- Dedicated circuit installation — a minimum 32A dedicated circuit from your switchboard to the charger location, with appropriate cable sizing for the run length
- Charger mounting and commissioning — wall-mounted installation, connection, and full testing including earth fault and insulation resistance checks
- Smart charger configuration — Wi-Fi setup, app pairing, charging schedules, and solar integration if applicable
Solar + EV Charging
If you have rooftop solar (or plan to), a smart EV charger can be configured to prioritise charging from excess solar generation — dramatically reducing your charging costs. Chargers like the Zappi can dynamically adjust their charging rate based on real-time solar production, effectively giving you free fuel from the sun.
We install and configure solar-integrated EV charging systems and can assess whether your existing solar system has enough surplus to meaningfully offset EV charging.
EV Charger Installation Cost Guide
- Basic installation (charger near switchboard, no board upgrade): $500–$800 labour + charger cost
- Standard installation (dedicated circuit run up to 15m, possible board upgrade): $1,000–$2,000 labour + charger
- Complex installation (long cable run, switchboard upgrade, underground conduit): $2,000–$3,500+ labour + charger
- Charger units range from $800 (basic) to $2,500+ (smart/3-phase)
